Chinese master Qi Baishi (1863-1957), a painter of peasant origins from the Hunan Province, became one of the most important Chinese artists of the twentieth century. Also known as Ch'i Pai-shih in western literature, he began his 70-year career as a humble carpenter and wood carver, graduating to seal carving and finally to painting, to ultimately become hailed as "China's Picasso." In 1955 he was awarded the International Peace Prize by the World Peace Council.
Qi Baishi carried the traditional manner of Chinese painting into the modern era and his works are widely collected today and considered masterpieces of the genre.
