| Hummingbirds Calendar, Wall, Pomegranate
These illustrations are from John Gould's A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds, published between 1849 and 1861. (The complete work is 5 volumes, with 360 hand-colored plates.) Not formally trained in the natural sciences, Gould picked up prodigious knowledge from his father, a worker in the Royal Gardens at Windsor Castle, and from his job as a taxidermist at the Zoological Society of London. Among the beautiful birds here are the blue-breast, the Ecuadorian rainbow, the crimson topaz, and the yellow-fronted Panoplites. This 2006 Wall calendar was published by Pomegranate.
